The Best Quotes About Sunset

6-8 Minute Read

In his feature film, The Drifter, Rob Machado famously reflects on the contrasting beauties of sunrises versus sunsets:

“I never really understood why people gather to watch the sun disappear. There is so much more beauty in watching something arrive.”

Although I agree with Machado that sunrises are more beautiful, I wouldn’t say I never understood why so many people gather to see the sunset. In fact, there are so many reasons for us to watch the sunset that I would rephrase Machado’s words and say that I never really understood why people don’t gather more often to see the sun disappear.

For some of us, a sunset may be a chance to sit still for a minute. For others, it may be about the show of colors. Some see this as an opportunity to get in touch with Mother Nature; others, to get in touch with the divine.

Some want this intimate moment of contemplation so they can look within themselves; others so they can expand and explore beyond themselves.

There are those who appreciate the sunset – and indeed the sunrise – for facilitating navigation, for telling us where we are in relation to a given landmark. And then there are those who embrace a more philosophical side to this natural occurrence: some things end so others can begin.

But regardless of the reasons, one thing is certain – we all enjoy watching the sun go to rest, and so with that, here are best quotes about sunset.

FIVE CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT SUNSET

1. The Earth’s atmosphere, roughly 500km/300mi thick, facilitates sunsets by acting as a prism of air and scattering the light emitted by the sun.

2. Due to the way our planet’s atmosphere bends light, we can see the setting even though it has already dropped behind the horizon line – or any other line acting as a horizon.

3. As a sunset unfolds, the sun itself loses its blue hues and the wavelengths slowly degrade into warmer colors – first green, then yellow, orange, and finally the red so many of us know and cherish.

4. When there is pollution in the air, smoke particles end up filtering out colors and enhancing the warm hues (yellows, pinks, oranges, and reds) in a sunset.

5. The higher a cloud is in the sky, the more vivid is the sunset colors they reproduce.

Bonus: A Sunset Poem

Clenched Soul
By Pablo Neruda

“We have lost even this twilight.
No one saw us this evening hand in hand
while the blue night dropped on the world.

I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.

Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin in my hand.

I remembered you with my soul clenched
in that sadness of mine that you know.

Where were you then?
Who else was there?
Saying what?
Why will the whole of love come on me suddenly
when I am sad and feel you are far away?

The book fell that always closed at twilight
and my blue sweater rolled like a hurt dog at my feet.

Always, always you recede through the evenings
toward the twilight erasing statues.”
