Best Beaches In Algarve: My Top Picks
Last Updated on February 28, 2024 by Matt Hapgood
I moved to Portugal a few years ago, and as a surfer, I love visiting the beach!
While I like to go where the waves are, sometimes kids, family, and friends want to go elsewhere. And being the doting father that I am, I have to cave in (see what I did there) and go where surfing is not an option.
So here’s my rundown of the best beaches in Algarve, which I’ve tried to separate by type. They are ALL worth a visit though if you are on vacation, or recently moved to Portugal.
- Best for Scenery
- Best for Families
- Best for Surfers
- Best for Adventure Seekers
- Best for Nature Lovers
- Best for Snorkeling
- Best for Nightlife
- Best Overall
Best for Scenery: Praia da Marinha
With its dramatic cliffs, golden sands, and clear turquoise waters, Praia da Marinha is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and is a must-visit for those who appreciate breathtaking natural landscapes. Located just to the South of Lagoa, if you make the trip here you will not be disappointed!
Best for Families: Praia da Luz
The waves are often calm at Praia da Luz. Combine this with clear water and family-friendly amenities, and you have the perfect beach for families with young children. In summer the place is packed with all manner of watersports activities, there are kids’ swings on the beach and plenty of places for an ice cream or some other cold refreshments. With a really safe and welcoming vibe, Praia da Luz is a great beach to visit.
Best for Surfers: Praia do Amado
Praia do Amado is a renowned surfing spot in the Algarve, attracting surfers of all levels with its consistent waves and stunning setting. The beach also offers surf schools and equipment rentals for those looking to learn or improve their skills. The reason I put this as the top pick for surfers is the protection the beach (and waves) get from the common Northerly wind known as the Nortada. When everywhere else on the West Coast is blown out, you can often find great waves at Amado. As a result, the crowds can be an issue, but hey, you can’t win them all!
Best for Adventure Seekers: Praia dos Três Irmãos
Known for its intriguing rock formations and hidden coves, Praia dos Três Irmãos, or the beach of three brothers, offers a fascinating landscape for exploration and adventure. Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, or climbing among the striking cliffs and caves. Oh and of course, don’t forget that sunset selfie moment!
Best for Nature Lovers: Ilha da Culatra
Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Ilha da Culatra is a car-free island boasting pristine beaches and an abundance of wildlife. This beach is ideal for those who appreciate unspoiled nature and a tranquil, off-the-beaten-path experience.
Best for Snorkeling: Praia do Camilo
With its crystal-clear waters and fascinating marine life, Praia do Camilo is a top destination for snorkeling enthusiasts. The beach’s sheltered location and rocky formations create ideal conditions for underwater exploration.
Best for Nightlife: Praia da Rocha
Praia da Rocha is a popular beach known for its vibrant atmosphere, offering visitors a lively mix of beach activities, bars, and restaurants. This beach is perfect for those who want to soak up the sun by day and enjoy a buzzing nightlife scene after the sun sets.
Best Overall
Arrifana Beach, situated near the picturesque town of Aljezur, is a stunning crescent-shaped beach surrounded by imposing cliffs that create a sheltered and scenic setting. Popular among surfers and nature lovers alike, this beach boasts consistent waves that attract surfers of all levels, while its dramatic landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop for those seeking a tranquil escape. The beach is also home to a charming fishing harbor, adding to its quaint, authentic appeal.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Arrifana Beach, from surfing and bodyboarding to sunbathing and exploring the nearby coastal trails. The area is also known for its diverse marine life, making it a fantastic spot for snorkeling and observing the underwater world. With its combination of natural beauty, thrilling surf, and peaceful atmosphere, Arrifana Beach is a true gem in the Algarve region, offering a memorable experience for all who visit.
