Are Need Essentials Wetsuits Any Good?
Last Updated on June 9, 2024 by Matt Hapgood
The first time I bought a Need Essentials wetsuit was way back in 2016 – and I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised with the form, function and quality ever since.
Need Essentials is a relatively new brand in the surf industry, founded in 2015 by a group of experienced surfers who were tired of overpriced wetsuits with unnecessary features. They set out to create a line of high-quality wetsuits that were affordable and accessible to all surfers.
What sets Need Essentials apart from other wetsuit brands is their direct-to-consumer business model. By cutting out the middleman and selling directly to customers, they are able to offer their wetsuits at a fraction of the cost of other high-end brands. Despite the lower price point, the wetsuits are made with high-quality materials such as Japanese limestone neoprene and are designed with minimalistic features that prioritize function over fashion. In fact, the company slogan is “Everything you need, nothing you don’t.”
History of Need Essentials
Founding and Philosophy
I founded Need Essentials in 2015 with a simple philosophy in mind: to provide high-quality wetsuits at an affordable price. As a surfer myself, I knew how frustrating it was to spend a lot of money on a wetsuit that would only last a season or two. I wanted to create a brand that would offer surfers the opportunity to get a great wetsuit without breaking the bank.
To achieve this goal, I decided to cut out all the unnecessary expenses that come with traditional wetsuit brands. I eliminated the middleman, the marketing, and the fancy packaging. By doing this, I was able to offer high-quality wetsuits at a fraction of the cost.
Evolution of Products
Since our founding, we have continued to evolve our products and improve our offerings. We started with just one wetsuit model, but we now offer a full range of wetsuits for men, women, and children. We have also expanded our product line to include surf accessories such as board bags, fins, and leashes.
Despite our growth, we have remained true to our original philosophy. We still offer high-quality wetsuits at an affordable price, and we still cut out all the unnecessary expenses. We believe that every surfer deserves a great wetsuit, and we are committed to making that a reality.
Overall, I am proud of what we have accomplished at Need Essentials. We have created a brand that is focused on quality, affordability, and sustainability. We are constantly striving to improve our products and our customer service, and we are excited to see what the future holds.
Wetsuit Technology and Features
Materials and Construction
As a surfer, I understand the importance of having a wetsuit that is durable, flexible, and comfortable. Need Essentials wetsuits are made from high-quality neoprene, which is a synthetic rubber that provides excellent insulation and flexibility. The neoprene used in Need Essentials wetsuits is also environmentally friendly, as it is made from limestone instead of petroleum.
In addition to the neoprene, Need Essentials wetsuits feature glued and blind-stitched seams, which prevent water from seeping through the seams and keep you warm and dry in the water. The seams are also reinforced with tape to add extra durability and prevent them from coming apart over time.
Temperature Ratings
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a wetsuit is the water temperature you will be surfing in. Need Essentials wetsuits come in a range of thicknesses to accommodate different water temperatures. The thickest wetsuit is 5mm and is suitable for water temperatures below 50°F, while the thinnest wetsuit is 2mm and is suitable for water temperatures above 70°F.
It’s important to note that everyone experiences water temperatures differently, so it’s always a good idea to err on the side of caution and choose a wetsuit that is slightly thicker than you think you might need.
Style and Fit
Need Essentials wetsuits come in a variety of styles and fits to accommodate different body types and preferences. The most popular style is the full suit, which covers your entire body and provides maximum warmth and protection. Need Essentials also offers spring suits, which have short arms and legs and are ideal for warmer water temperatures.
When it comes to fit, Need Essentials wetsuits are designed to be snug but not restrictive. They are available in a range of sizes to ensure a proper fit, and the company provides a detailed sizing chart to help you find the right size. It’s important to choose a wetsuit that fits properly, as a wetsuit that is too loose will allow water to seep in and defeat the purpose of wearing a wetsuit in the first place.
